Tso Moriri is also known as Mountain Lake. There are two popular lakes in Ladakh and one of them is the Tso Moriri Lake. The tranquil beauty of the lake leaves tourists mesmerised. It is located at the height of 4595 metres above sea level. The high altitude lake is quite serene and calm. The depth is around 100 feet and it runs up to 28 km.
You can’t put up the tent in the area surrounding the lake as it is a wetland reserve. You can stay in one of the nearby camps and enjoy its mesmerising view. The reflection of the snow-clad mountains on the lake will make your soul calm. If you are a nature lover, seeing migratory birds flying over the lake will be a treat for your eyes. It is one of the most preferred destinations for offbeat travellers.
The lake is located in the Changtang region of Jammu and Kashmir and stays frozen from November to April. Avoid the winter months if you want to avoid the freezing temperatures. The best time to visit the Tso Moriri Lake is the summer months when the beauty of the lake is at its peak. It will take around 5 hours for you to drive from Tso Moriri to Leh Town in normal conditions.
If you don’t stay in Jammu and Kashmir, you will need the Inner Line Permit to visit the protected areas in Leh Ladakh. You can obtain it online through their official website and will cost around 400 rupees. An additional 20 rupees might be charged as the Inner Line Fee. If you are visiting the Tso Moriri Lake for the first time, get in touch with our travel agents and we will arrange the necessary permits.
